Khao Sam Roi Yot guide and accommodation

Khao Sam Roi Yot (or Sam Roi Yod) was declared as the first coastal National Park in Thailand on 28th June 1996. The 98 square kilometer park is located approximately 50km south of Hua Hin. The name "Khao Sam Roi Yot" means the mountain with 300 peaks in Thai. A series of grey limestone mountains rise from the gulf of Thailand to over 600 meters high, the most fascinating are Khao Yai, Khao Tham Prathun, Khao Daeng and Khao Khan Ban Dai. The limestone has been worn away in parts by natural errosion to form caves and crevaces such as Tum Kaeo, Tum Sai, and Tum Phraya Nakhon Cave.

The wooded mountains make it a site of outstanding natural beauty, but it is the freshwater marsh and coastal habitats, that gives the park ecological significance. The park also offers fine sandy beaches, spectacular caves, superb mountain viewpoints, offshore islands, forest trails, and estuarine and mangrove habitats, all within a relatively smalll area.

Bird watching
Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park has become a popular spot with bird watchers due to the 300 (approx) recorded species found here and the park's accessibility. The park is one of the best locations in Thailand to observe shorebirds. Between September and November hundreds of migratory shorebirds from traveling the East Asian/Australian flyway from Siberia, China, and Northern Europe arrive at the mudflats and marshes to feed and rest, before continuing their migratory journey south. Some will spend the winter months (November to March) here. These birds will begin the long return journey to their northern breeding grounds between March and May. The freshwater marsh near the vilage of Rong Jay provides a good opportunity to view a number of large waterbirds, songbirds and raptors. The marsh is one of only two sites in Thailand where the Purple Heron (pictured right) breeds.

Wildlife
The park still supports a population of Serow and blackish goat antelope. There are three species of primates; dusky or spectacled langur (pictured below), crab eating or long tailed macaque, and the slow lorris. Other mammals found are the barking deer, Malayan pangolin, fishing cat, common palm civet, Malayan porcupine, Javan mongosse, Siamese hare and grey bellied squarrel. Dolphins are often sighted in the coastal waters.

Tourist information and trails
A visitor centre is located at the park headquarters and is the focal point of the park's educational programmes. The center has excellent exhibits on a range of topics and a slide show is available for visitors viewing. The Horseshoe Trail and the Mangrove Nature Trails, both located near the Visitor Center, offer excellent opportunities to view a variety of habitats and wildlife. On the Mangrove Nature Trail you can see muddskippers, crabs, monitor lizards, kingfishers, herons, egrets and a a variety of other birds species. The Horse shoe Trail will offer views of macaque and langur monkeys, squirrels and an assortment of colorful songbirds. The best time to observe wildlife and birds is early morning or before sunset.
